Okay mom...

...why ARE bananas so good?

I just saw that I had an email from my parents with the subject line "Fw: Fwd: Fw: WHY BANANAS ARE SO GOOD !!"

So I'm on my lunch break, and I like bananas so I open it up to see what it has to say.

And let me tell you. Bananas are pretty amazing!

What a weekend

Fantastic Times All-around is what we should call this past FTA retreat weekend. I smell a recap!

It started with a tremendous drive out. The girls and I listened to the father-daughter conversation seminar from Faithwalkers. It was incredibly convicting for all four of us, and it sparked some really inspiring conversation...then we got to the cabin and caught up with the people who had already arrived. (They'd had a busy day of sardines they were resting from!)

Then the next day Rachel and I took a little run, which is always a good way to start the day. Then we made pancakes and french toast and talked for a little bit about what it was we were retreating from. It kind of started us off on a good note because we all got the chance to open up a little bit about what we need to get away from in our lives. Steve was the last to speak and he ended us on a fantastic note about his engagement with Beth and how God has been mightily at work in their lives.

Then we had some time to relax for awhile, some people played Alyssa's version of scrabble, while others took naps, and Jimbo, Jess, Will, Rachel, Maggie and Jordan went out to the ice to drill a hole. We watched from indoors with binoculars, haha. They were of course drilling a hole for Nicole's baptism! After they were done, Nicole got into her wetsuit (Rachel and I garbed up in our sweet, but unnecessary, waders (pictures will come later)) and we all gathered together and went out to the lake. Lee said some really cool stuff about baptism and we got a little bit of a chance to reflect on how much we love Nicole and how much she's grown this year which she got to share a little bit about as well. And then we proceeded to just baptize her!! She said it wasn't even that cold! What a trooper!

Then a bunch of guys (plus Maggie and Nicole) got the bright idea to make the best of this hole in the ice and hop on in, one at a time! So a bunch of people got in their suits or pajamas and just hopped in, I think we got it on video, so that'll be awesome (I'm thinking it'll be a gem for the slideshow!!!).

Then we played games for a little while longer, had lunch...had dinner. Talked a bit more, and at about 7:30 we all gathered around. Will shared his testimony with us, and that kind of sparked a match. We all, one after the other, just started sharing what was on our hearts or where God has been taking us. It was definitely a tear-filled night for everybody, but it was just so good. I don't think I've ever felt so close to 16 other people in my life. Everyone just let their guards down, and allowed ourselves to be vulnerable. Matthew 18:20 says that "where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them." There were not two or three. There were 17. And God definitely made Himself known to us, He was undoubtedly in our midst. I wish I could relay to those reading this that moment, but I can't...I just need to get it down so that I won't forget it myself.

The next morning Rachel and I took a farewell to SoDak run, then the guys made pancakes and we all packed up our stuff for the ride home. The retreat however wasn't over for us girls! We listened to another seminar (swervers) and talked for a good while about that. We did this little exercise that was not just fun and productive to do, but it also helped us get to know each other even better! Just as we were finishing that up we saw Jimbo's Durango drive by with Steve's entire body flailing out the window. Hahaha, somehow they kept getting behind us and then catching up, so we had some fun with them on the road too. We took a spontaneous pitstop at Dairy Queen and hung out there for awhile.

I didn't get reception in South Dakota, so I found out when I got home that Hoops (and Jenna) had called. I got a chance to talk to Hoops for awhile, and share with him the goings on about the weekend which was a really good thing to do because it kind of solidified the experience for me! It kind of made it more real, if that makes sense. On a side note, Hoops also told me a bit about the gcm staff training in Champaigne and how that was, and seeing Bemi and JK and Nick and the other Christine. So encouraged that Hoops and JK are both taking this awesome step in their faiths. Two Godly men that are going to be future Karl Quickerts!! But in their own special unique way, of course, and that is so exciting!!

So in conclusion, great. This morning I was in my car listening to something, and the guy I was listening to asked "if you could have any wish granted in the world, what would it be?" and I really searched my brain to find what that answer would be, and I kept going back to those three hours Saturday night, where God made His presence so known, and all 17 of us felt so close to each other. If I had one wish, it would be to remain in that moment for ever. And wow, I get to someday, and that is pretty unfathomably incredible. I know that that sort of hope has come into me before and has quickly been shooed away over time - where I start seeking creature comforts and satisfaction from situations here and now on earth - but that just can't happen! I want to hold onto this hope that God has placed inside me (and the others who were there) and allow it to work through me to the max.

Okay, that's all I can think to say, except this: Live the Fight!!

puppies

Have you ever stopped to think, I mean really think, about puppies?

They're quite possibly the cutest thing that God created. They're so cute! Oh my gosh, I can't even fathom how cute they really are because my heart starts to hurt!

Take a look and see if you don't agree:

Nothing is cuter, absolutely nothing

this moment.

I went to subway and brought it back to my cube for lunch.

I got a footlong tuna with lettuce and cucumbers and onions.

So now, at this moment, as I have "Mayberry" by Rascal Flatts on repeat, I'm just popping lime mint tic tacs in my mouth - one after the other. My hope is that if I injest the entire tiny box within 5 minutes my breath will smell like lime instead.

However, my efforts are futile because the diet coke I will inevitably have within the hour will almost certainly kill everything in my mouth - including the smell.

Can you believe I ate an entire footlong tuna sub? How do I do that?

itunes at work

I got this exercise off of Barnesy's (Barnesey's?) xanga - I thought it would be fun to do with my work itunes:

the good, the bad, and the ugly

Normally I rave about those harriet runs, right?

Well tonight's was less than enjoyable, and it was completely my fault.

First of all, I didn't have socks, but I thought what the heck, who cares? Oh boy, why didn't I know that no socks would cause blisters?

Second of all, I ran too fast. I managed to make it around a lot faster than I usually do, but I hadn't run in over a week, so I wanted to throw up everywhere.

Otherwise it was real good! I just know now that I am better off running slower and with socks.

Yours truly,
Christine

old classics

I was looking through some old Australia pictures today, and felt like posting some old favorites

Halloween:

Jess frolicking on St. Kilda's Beach:

and of course:

jigsaw

It's stirring inside of me, so I decided to let it spill onto the blog:

Above all things guard your heart, for from it flows life
- Proverbs 4:23

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
- Philippians 4:6-7

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.
- Psalm 139:22-23

On the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate

Rustic Cafe Mug

Today my green Rustic Cafe Mug has broken.

Give yourself a moment.

I have another one at home, so really it's fine...but I decided that (hopefully) when I go out to Estes this summer for a few days I can go to the Rustic with my broken mug in tow and say to them "replace my mug." They replaced Igor's when this happened, so they should replace mine too...7 months old or no - replace my mug!

more grocery deals!

Today I spent the day at General Mills for some training. It's like a city, so I went to the grocery store while I was there. Again I got some pretty amazing deals. They sell all their general mills products for supercheap, so I went ahead and got like 4 boxes of cereal (3 of them were versions of cheerios), granola bars, 4 boxes of brownie mix, one of those industrial bags of pizza rolls, a carton of milk, care bears gummies, and chapstick: again only 28 dollars!

What? Seriously that's some pretty crazy deals (except the milk, that was the same price as normal milk. And the chapstick was normal chapstick price; so don't bother asking - this doesn't beat the amish store).

What?

I also bought stamps, they were right across the hall from the bank and the hair salon, a couple floors above the gym.

Saturday night

So what do people like me end up doing with their saturday nights??

Well, after spending 3 glorious hours with Jodi talking about budgets (no sarcasm at all, seriously) I was able to talk to Jenna on the phone for about 20 glorious minutes (shout out - Jenna!)

But...then what did I do? Well, Peter and I went to Noodles and then we hung out and watched two movies. The first one was pretty ridiculous - it was our high school graduation tape. Peter was appalled: "I sound so gay!" And I was pretty embarassed too. I don't remember everything I said, but it was definitely Jess and I with microphones and I ended my part by saying "in the fall I'm going to Arizona!"

That did not happen. But bar none the best part of this video was when Peter was in front of our entire graduating class singing the little mermaid song "what do you call them? Feet"

THEN we watched the only movie that could ever ever top that - From Justin To Kelly

Pretty much the best night of movies I've ever had in all my 22.5 years.

strange

Has anyone noticed that Superchick's "Anthem" is the theme song to Mtv's Gauntlet 2? Does anyone else think this was a strange choice?

It's nice when everything just makes sense causing decision making to be extremely easy. This happened today. Sarah and I went to a bunch of apartments to take some tours. Most of them were either too run-down, or too expensive, or planned to rip a lot of money out of me for having a cat...but then we found this place:

Not only was this the friendliest atmosphere, the longest hours in the management office (big plus), underground parking, a volleyball court, raquetball, pool, tennis, etc., a bunch of party rooms that can be booked for free (FTA: read "small group party!"), and like 8 thousand running paths, but it was also by far the cheapest rent. The cheapest rent and also the best move-in deal, I figured out that I'm going to be saving about one thousand dollars out of rent and deposit that I don't have to pay with this move-in deal. Like pretty much I couldn't even believe it! I've been kind of struggling lately as to how I was going to live beneath my means while still living alone, and this is a huge answer to that.

The only drawback is that it is kind of far from everywhere, but it's only half a drawback - Sarah reminded me that it would give me a lot more quality time in the car to listen to Faithwalkers and LT stuff. So, I'm even excited about that!

So yeah...anyone want to help me move this summer??

Jenna's Pictures

I was putzing around in my documents folder and I found all these pictures from Jenna that I'd forgotten about. They made me really happy:

Here's Jenna and Christine at the closing ceremonies:

Here's Ally and I making phone calls at the Starbucks in Boulder:

Here's Bemi and I right before the variety show (side note: "luke roetman!"):

And here's a picture that Jenna took in the Pondo the day that everyone was saying goodbye to each other:

I really miss everybody. I talked to Bemi on the phone the other day, saw Jessie and Hoops at Faithwalkers, Jenna and I have been in close touch lately, I saw Ally and C2 a week and a half ago, and I got this awesome email from Amber the other day...I guess all these reminders are making me miss them all more than ever. Someday I get to be with these people forever though, so that'll be a party! Plus, I think heaven is going to have a couple views like this one:

Yeah, woo! In heaven, if you're thinking "where's Christine??" You can find me on that heavenly porch swing in the sky gazing at the majestic mountains of heaven's own rocky mountain national park.

The cheeseball meter is gonna blow!

dry hands

I knew that my hands have been dry lately, but today I realized that I have dry hands.

They're all red with like freckly things around the knuckles. I looked down and saw blood coming from one of the cracks!

From now on I'm going to have lotion all the time!

Today was cube move day, and as I had nothing to move but a laptop and some office supplies, I was able to do it in about 2 minutes. So I got to leave right after lunch!

When I got home I saw that The Outsiders was on! Yeah Ralph Macchio! Johnny, Ponyboy, Dally, Darry and Sodapop - yep, looks like the gangs all here.

Speaking of the 80s. Last night I mixed up Delta Goodrem (Australian pop singer) with Delta Burke - Neither Rachel, Beth, nor Steve knew who I was talking about. I mean, I guess there's no good reason to know who she is, but I was surprised that Designing Women wasn't a part of their childhoods as it was mine.

Monumentous!

So, today is kind of a turning point in my life. I mean, you know, my schedule is different. It kind of reminds me of the last time my schedule changed. This is known to all as "my first day of kindergarten."

You might even say these were the two most important days of my life - you'd be wrong, but you could still say it. Let's compare!

First here is me with Anew, age 5:

And here's me this morning, age 22:

Stay tuned, in 43 years there will surely be a picture of me on my first day of retirement. My future husband will probably take a picture of me asleep (with that quarter-sized drool spot on my pillow, just below my mouth opening)

first day of work!

Today was my first day of work. My team took me out to Big Bowl for lunch. I haven't gotten a chance to bite into any work yet, but my coworker told me to just surf the net for a half hour while they're in a meeting...so here I am!

Later today I'm going to post a few pictures for comparison.

I love you very much.
Christine

Happy Whoopi Goldberg Day!

Sister Act and Made in America on tv on the same day?? I thought it was a strange coincidence until I looked at the calendar and saw that it was January 9th - Whoopi Goldberg day. Of course!

I hope yours was a happy one!

sick

Flus suck. I don't have the flu anymore, but I do have a cold. Colds are fine, they don't keep me from nothin. But right now I sat back to eat my cereal and my nose got so stuffed up that I actually felt...annoyed.

But now that I'm typing up a blog entry it's clearing out - and I'm feeling pretty okay with having a cold again. The Price is Right is on!

December 29th, 2005

Ustedes saldrán con alegría y serán guiados en paz
For you will go out with joy, and be led forth with peace
- Isaiah 55:12

I've been thinking about Faithwalkers, and this verse just seems to capture the week, and especially the events of the 29th. The day before, one of the pastors told us to pray before we open our bibles that God will show us something that we can use throughout the day to show Him that we love Him. I stumbled upon this verse on the 29th - I felt a need to be sent by God, but I didn't know where, or to whom, or how, you know? Well, this was a pretty awesome day, and this verse followed me throughout it.

Brent Knox shared with us an incredibly motivating and inspiring message about church leadership and our individual roles in that. Then Mark shared with us about church plants and God's revolution.

"Church planting spreads the revolution."

After these two messages, I could hardly contain my readiness and excitement for setting this revolution into action! I went to the church planting panel, and that was where something just clicked. I still don't know where God is going to send me, but I don't care! God gave me just what I needed, he took all my thoughts and plans and focused them in one direction.

Another thing I've been reflecting on for awhile is how much I lack the sort of real love I want to express. How can this revolution work without a foundation of pure love?

"It's the love that will soften the hearts of the world"
- Doug Brown

I want that love!

Other events of the 29th that were exciting: the Awakening conference via sattelite from Amsterdam, Hoops coming down from Columbia, hanging out with Jessie, playing Phase 10, losing my water bottle for the 9th time (and of course miraculously finding it for the 9th time), and my sister-in-law went into labor! (so on the 30th, my new nephew was born!)

As I was falling asleep the events of the day were swimming through my mind. God had shown me so much! So much more than I think I could write about in a blog - so many exciting things, but also a lot of hard realities. I'd had plenty of opportunities throughout the day to apply the verse, but it was lying there feeling overwhelmed and honestly a little bit...forlorn...when the power behind that verse really took over. I have to go out with joy and be led forth in peace, no matter if He's sending me to a place of utter destitution or a place of unending laughter and fun. That's how I must show Him that I love Him.

The Horse Manure

How did I not blog about this?

Yesterday just outside of Oelwein, this car in front of me drove over some horse dung and it flew up into my windshield. A huge glob of it. I tried to get rid of it with my wipers and the washer fluid...but it only decreased in size. It was a really windy bitingly cold day out, so when I stopped for gas I couldn't find the energy to scrape it off. So now, 36 hours later there is just a little glob of crusty horse manure from Oelwein, Iowa on my windshield.

That's all!

I can't wait to go to the dentist

I think I'm losing a tooth!

Grocery List

A list of things I bought at the Amish Store:

- Three boxes of cereal (Berry Burst Cheerios (Strawberry Banana), Organic Wild Puffs, Fiber One)
- Scented Oil Airlets Air Freshener
- Five Bars of Soap
- Two boxes of TLC crackers (tasty little crackers, and that's true!)
- Two boxes of Ghirardelli Chocolate Syrup Brownies Mix
- A box of Apples & Cinnamon flavored instant oatmeal
- Two bottles of Mauna La'i Island Guava Juice (!!!!)
- A bag of Quaker Rice Cakes (Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip flavored)
- A can of Planters Spanish Peanuts
- Ronzoni Three Cheese Tortellini
- Two boxes of Annie's Homegrown Shells & Real Aged Wisconsin Cheddar (according to Ally it's really good and usually priced to suit that good taste)
- A box of Size 2 Coffee Filters
- Two bags of Columbian coffee
- Two bags and one box of pasta (Ziti, Penne, Whole Wheat Fusilli (the swirly kind))
- Five little snack size Crackers with Peanut Butter things
- A 6-pack of tic-tac limes
- A 3-pack of winterfresh gum
- Two bags of Swedish Fish
- Two bags of Sour Skittles
- Blistex Lip Ointment

Total: 28 dollars.

It's one tank of gas to get to Oelwein and back. So...I think it's actually cheaper overall to do my grocery shopping there!

Skip-Bo

Hello, I just went to Oelwein, Iowa to see Ally and the other Christine! It was a really great time! We hugged, we played games, we laughed.

Some things that happened:

We were in the basement talking and I had to go to the bathroom. Ally told me to go upstairs because the basement bathroom is her brothers and she thought it was too gross and would maybe not flush. I said "don't worry about it" and went in...a minute later I come out of the bathroom saying "Ally, help, the toilet won't flush!"

We played Yahtzee and Ally got THREE yahtzees! She wasn't even trying, she also wasn't trying when she rolled the Large Straight on her first roll. "hey - one, two, three, four, five!" - Ally. I lost, and Ally won of course, with Christine in 2nd place. However, I was using Bill's old scoring card, and I beat Bill. "I beat Bill..." - me "We all beat Bill..." - Christine

Then they taught me to play Skip-Bo, my new favorite game. I also really like how a b sounds after a p. So it's also my new favorite word. Skip-Bo.

We went to the amish store where there was SO much stuff! My favorite item was this juice I found! There's this juice that we had at Ben's friend Nate's house in Milwaukee 4 or 5 years ago. I loved it so much but I couldn't ever find it here in Minnesota. But there it was! At the Amish store! I only bought two bottles, I maybe should've bought all they had.

Ally told Christine and I all about the Amish culture, and later that night after Christine had gone home, Ally's mom and step-dad told me a whole lot MORE about amish culture. I now know what language they speak at home, and that men stop shaving their beards when they get married, and that when women come of age they sometimes are shipped off to pennsylvania to avoid inbreeding issues, they don't have electricity or cars of course, their houses are spotless, they go to school until 8th grade and then no more, I even saw their schoolhouse! At first I thought it would be kind of cool to be Amish, but then I saw that all their clothes were hung out to dry and decided that I really don't want to be Amish. This is because it was icky outside. Those clothes would be all cold and damp when you take them off the line. No thank you.

We bought some hot chocolate powder there that was REALLY good. It was easily the best I'd ever had, except I think that was because I had it with milk and I usually have it with water. And 2% milk at that!

Ally and I exchanged backrubs all three days I was there. 5 minutes on 5 minutes off. It felt so nice! We also ran a little bit yesterday and stretched and she taught me the Matrix. Pretty much the coolest weight lifting thing ever. I need Ally to tell me all that was involved in it so I can do it at home.

This morning Ally and I made caramel rolls, but they didn't pan out too well. So we ate cereal and watched the price of right and full house and then we hugged and said goodbye 8 thousand times.

I love Oelwein! Skip-Bo!

Faithwalkers!!!

So, Faithwalkers was awesome. God is so faithful and good!

A List:

1. Jessica Darling was there! She sang a song for us and shared something she'd written about how the last few years of her life have been...it was an incredible answer to prayer and a very moving way to start the week.

2. Jessica Nichols! I saw Jessie and was able to spend some time with her this week - I've missed that pretty little lady.

3. Running with Rachel and Maren in the wee hours.

4. Prayer, this was a conference surrounded by prayer. I thought I prayed enough, but I realized this week how much more I could and should be praying.

5. Being inspired to the point of just bursting at the seams with Jodi.

6. The Awakening conference in Amsterdam via satellite!!

7. Church planting!

8. Hoops coming to visit from Columbia

9. Two employees at the hotel came to know Christ during the conference!

10. My brother Eric had a baby, Andrew Charles Bearse!!

11. On the ride home, Ally and I were on the phone planning our visit this week (!) and she told me that Christine is going to be there too!

And now I've gotta get ready to go to bed because tomorrow I'm going to Iowa!!
