the endcase
I was going to blog about one of two things today:
1) The insanity of living next to a high school
2) The greatness of Arrested Development
But I will forego both these topics so that I can make a request. I am looking for a piece of furniture. It is an end table, but it is also a bookcase. This is an artist's rendition:
A) What would you call this thing? An endcase?
B) I think my parents had something like this in our basement. It's the most useful piece of furniture I can think of, and I would really like one. Where can I get one?
C) Will you build me one?
Thanks!
Christine

I don't know what it is, but it looks like something that would come to life in Beauty and the Beast and beat the ever loving crap out of you. (Sorry, but that was my first reaction to it.)
I'm guessing Ikea sells something like that...I think I may have seen one in their baby furniture section, actually...well, something similar to that. Maybe not exactly what you need, but close. (Maybe it's a cabinet with a bookcase)...regardless, I'd say try Ikea if you haven't already. If that fails, I'll make you one.
Mike, I'm a jack of all trades (one of those trades is kick-A computer drawing)
Maren, Ikea was the first place I've looked. I could probably experiment with their different stuff and put one together, but they definitely don't have anything right now that would work (unless baby stuff works differently).
I definitely want it more table than bookshelf though. Just a table with inconspicuous shelves - with kind of an 80s feel. And brown. Of course.
So make me one, that can be your first stay at home money making job! I'll give you 50 bucks.
I'm a mechanical drafter, so I could draw you up a blueprint if you give me the dimensions that you want this thing to be. You'll have to find someone else to built it though.
I was not inferring in anyway that I could not decipher your beautiful drawing. I understand what it is, but it doesn't change the fact that I have no idea what it is called. That's all I was getting at. And despite knowing it's function and what it looks like I still say it looks like a close relative of the dresser from Beauty in the Beast.
I'm going to ask a stupid question... could you not purchase (or build) the table and the bookcase separate and bolt them together? Emily has a sewing cabinet that looks similar to this, the cabinet and bookcase parts bolt together in the back. My two cents, thank you and goodnight : )
Christine...
I have a desk that is like this-a desk and then an attached bookcase. I looked and looked for this type of desk for quite a while, about 2 years ago. At that time, hardly anyone made desks/bookcases of this design. I would encourage you to build one! I wish I would have gone that route...instead, I bought my desk/bookcase from Target...don't get me wrong, it's great, but it's not the best in quality for the price I paid, if you know what I mean. Build it, paint it what you will...have fun.
I'm leaning more toward that route, except I really don't know how to build anything...and I don't have the equipment to do so. Really all I want is to have a table for next to my reading chair. And it'd be nice if it had a shelf that I could put books on...
I really should keep my eye out for someone who knows how to build things though...it's really great advice.
While I find your endcase issue important. (I do seem to think it a worthy effort.)
Don't pass on any opportunity to praise Arrested Development, it's quite possibly the greatest TV I've ever seen since SeaQuest... Why do I always like poorly received shows?
"Michael, I found out who Marta has been cheating on me with. Somebody named.... 'Hermano'"
